Wind Farms Near Palm Springs From Amtrak 1

By

Ride the Sunset Limited through Indio – Palm Springs and see hundreds of giant wind turbines generating green power on the north side of the tracks and along Interstate 10 on March 17th, 1998. This train was running several hours late and you will hear an announcement informing passengers of contingiency plans for connections to other trains. I would be detraining in Ontario and taking a motor coach to Santa Barbara to hook up with the Coast Starlight.

The turbines near the intercom announcent are Enertech E44 and USW 56-100s.

These machines where repowered in 1999 with Micon machines.

Nice capture! Thanks

Wikipedia has an article on it.

Someday wind will power the trains and they can stop burning diesel. But it would cost a lot to electrify all those rail lines.
