Description:
A cyclone that pounded western Myanmar at the weekend killed at least one person and forced thousands to flee, an official said, as news of the havoc wrought by the storm began to emerge. Cyclone Giri raged onto the coast of Rakhine state with winds of up to 193kmh on Friday, but was said to have since slowed to about 80kmh, state media said. The storm comes 2 1/2 years after Tropical Cyclone Nargis - which unleashed winds of 240kmh - devastated the country, leaving more than 138,000 dead or missing. The toll from Giri was not expected to be as high due to the topography of the region. A Washington Post blog report by the paper's weather team said most of the casualties from Nargis arose from the storm surge which pushed a 4m wall of water across the Irrawaddy Delta region, drowning thousands. Giri, on the other hand, made landfall further north than Nargis, away from the vulnerable, low-lying Irrawaddy Delta.
