Description:

A farmer lost a cowshed roof and another farmer's hayshed was blown to bits when a tornado swept across farmland at Oaonui, in south Taranaki, this afternoon. Haydn Langton was milking at the time the twister wrought its havoc, about 4.15pm, spooking both his herd and himself. He said he was relieved that twister narrowly avoided his house. The Opunake volunteer fire brigade was quickly on scene to secure the roof and help clean up. Down on Hitona Rd, Snoz Hamilton was counting his lucky stars after the tornado ripped up trees and smashed his hayshed. He said he was lucky the damage wasn't worse. "No stock lost, it's just a mess,'' he said.
