People didn’t just gather and decide that the world is going to end in December 21, 2012. It was actually the Mayan culture that first picked this date as the supposedly end of our world. Before you start hating them though, it is best that you first learn all you need to about the Mayan people and their calendar.
First off, who are the Mayan people? The Mayan civilization is a pre-american civilization that existed between 1000 BCE to 500 BCE near the area that we now believe to be New Mexico. They are quite advanced for their time and in fact, had advanced systems dealing with mathematics, astronomy, architecture and agriculture. During their time, men have learned and discovered a lot and started to enjoy a more sophisticated sense of living. Plus, the Mayan civilization is a highly spiritual one wherein most of their actions and beliefs are based on certain spiritual sign or symbol.
Next, why did they think that the world is going to end next year? What were there basis in choosing 2012 as the time the world will end. Technically, the Mayan didn’t say that the world was going to end. What they said however was that every few thousand years, around 5000 years, an age ends. It doesn’t make sense? Well, for the Mayan, time is linear unlike the way we think of it as cyclical. We may have months or years to measure decades and centuries but time for us really doesn’t end. It’s a cycle that just continues. For the Mayan however, time is linear. For them, an age is made up of 5000+ years after which the world will end.
Because of their increased spirituality, most people started thinking that this may really be the case. That the Mayan may have known something about life and evolution that we didn’t. Plus, the fact that the Mayan civilization had a great understanding of the heavens and astronomy lead a lot of people to believe that our medium of demise is through some interplanetary collision or a comet collision. However, some people left out a couple of important things about the Mayan calendar. They just stopped at the world ending in 2012 and didn’t bother with how the Mayan perceived of such an event.
For the Mayan, the end of the world is a joyous moment. It is a time when we move for the better and not a time for destruction the way some would have you believe.
