NASA SDO – Observations of the X2 Solar Flare on Feb 15, 2011

This movie shows you how two of the three instruments observed the X2 solar flare on February 15, 2011. Sunspot 1158 unleashed the strongest solar flare in more than four years. The eruption, which peaked at 0156 UT on February15th registered X2 on the Richter scale of solar flares. X-flares are the strongest type of solar flare, and this is the first such eruption of new Solar Cycle 24. In addition to flashing Earth with UV radiation, the explosion also hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) in our direction. Credit: NASA SDO / Lockheed Martin / Stanford University

@zenithsage Thank you a true and honest answer. Could not say it any betetr myself this these flares we are seing now are minor and could affect radio signals and power grids and stuff. But for us humans there is nothing to worry about yet. But teh sun is comming back to life after being very quiet. Its goong int teh 11th cycle. So it will be very active in 2012=2013 solar maxinum which could cause havoc on earth.

how slow is this in real time. or how long is the interval of those flares (hours? minute? or second like in this video)?

There are some Theorys about it, but at the moment, scientists think, that Neutrinos can’t cause Earthquakes!

Could this have the potential of causing a big earthquake some where on earth? I heard that neutrinos that penetrate the earth, can cause earthquakes.. what is the longitude and latitude of this solar flare? I also wonder, what cause and effect, might this flare have on people of earth; i.e; violence, people acting abnormal, etc…

We observe the Sun in various wavelengths and those numbers show the wavelengths we currently see. And yes, we see different temperatures with different wavelengths.

@screamjackson Just a guess but i’d think the “(~1MK)” might stand for 1 million kalvin because I believe these are basicly seeing different temps with each lens.

Unless the Earth’s Magnetic field catastrophically collapses a flare/cme will not wipe out life on Earth. If it does it will be of our own accord due to panic over power loss or war for resources.
As for Solar Cycle 24 its been a very disappointing cycle as we’ve only started getting some regularly occurring sun spots which is why everyone is so concerned over the sun all of a sudden. A new cycle starts every 11 years or so and this one is a year later then normal making us question the science

For longer then man has walked the Earth the planet has been blasted by flares and CME’s. For the roughly 15k years man has walked the earth we’ve only started to understand electricity 400 years ago and weren’t actively harnessing & integrating it into our lives till roughly 150 years ago. The only reason we worry about solar flares/CME’s now is because we’re so dependent on electronics for everything in our daily lives.

a SOLAR flare from March 30 2010 3 pm…all 3′s when CERN banged.
Cern was SUPER BLOWN away by the results when asked about the results they said they didnt know we have to evaluate the datat… They said it SURPASSEd their wildest hopes. Yeah causing a solar flare with CERN would be a big warm fuzzy surprise for the DEVIL CERN LOGO 666 Go see for yourself. CHECK THE TIME CODE on my video response
