According to Indian astrology, Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun in the Solar System. The planet is named after the Roman god of war, Mars. It is often described as the “Red Planet”, as the iron oxide prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance.

Vedic astrology says, Mars is a planet with a thin atmosphere, having surface features suggestive both of the impact craters of the Moon and the volcanoes, valleys, deserts, and polar ice caps of Earth.

Vedic astrologer said that the rotational period and seasonal cycles of Mars are likewise similar to those of Earth, as is the tilt that produces the seasons. The smooth Borealis basin in the northern hemisphere covers 40% of the planet and may be a giant impact feature.

In 1965, Vedic astrology says about the presence of liquid water on the planet’s surface. This was based on observed periodic variations in light and dark patches, particularly in the polar latitudes, which appeared to be seas and continents; long, dark striations were interpreted by some as irrigation channels for liquid water.

Indian astrology narrates that the surface of Mars has undergone many changes due to volcanism, impacts from other bodies, movements of its crust, and atmospheric effects such as dust storms. The dust storms can reach tremendous proportions. Recent Hubble images have shown the whole surface of the planet covered with a massive dust storm. Polar ice caps are present on Mars. These ice caps increase and decrease in size depending on the season.

Indian astrology further told that Mars has some remarkable geological characteristics, including the largest volcanic mountain in the solar system, Olympus Mons (27 km high and 600 km across); volcanoes in the northern Tharsis region that are so huge they deform the planet’s roundness; and a gigantic equatorial rift valley, the Valles Marineris.

Indian astrology believes that Mars has two small moons, Phobos and Deimos. It is uncertain how they formed, but it is believed that they may be asteroids that have been snared by Mars’ gravity.
