Description:

Six people had to spend Christmas morning in hospital and two police officers had to be decontaminated after an unknown toxic substance was thrown through the window of a Christchurch home. The attack happened about 1.30am and six occupants, four adults and two children, of a Pages Road home had to be treated for breathing problems and irritation to the eyes and ears after they came in contact with an unknown toxic substance, Senior Sergeant Murray Hurst said. Two police officers who attended the scene had to be decontaminated. Police had no idea who carried out the apparently random attack, Hurst said. Police were guarding the scene and the occupants would not be able to return until scene examinations had been carried out.
