He (Jim Cole) was taking photos of a sow with cub(s). He received sever facial injuries from a claw (not a bite). Rich Berman (a friend of Cole) said he had no details of the attack, other than that the bear hit Cole twice in the head and face with its claws, wreaking terrible damage.
