@TruthSurge The psalms are borrowed from the Canaanites [almost word for word] and Egypttians.

Wow. Excellent.

I never imagined I’d learn so much from a 4 minute clip. She’s good, very good!

I sort of gave up after vid 3 where she said that Leviticus held all life sacred. That’s just rich. hahaha There is no humor in the Bible. Almost no light-hearted stuff except thank gawd they included the Psalms and song of solomon. Anyway, I just don’t know why she’d say such a blatant falsehood about Leviticus and Deuteronomy. God has his chosen people kill numerous neighbors. So much for all life being sacred. I won’t comment on further vids.

@TruthSurge
Gosh, you are right! A thing’s a phallic symbol if it’s longer than it’s wide (Melanie Safka).
Well, she is not quite so blunt about the realities — or unrealities, rather — of the OT, but she will get there if you listen between the lines.

2:15 Is she saying the penis diagram should be smaller? hahahha MUCH smaller? oh man… no way!
My understanding is that the OT contains huge amounts, copious amounts of exaggeration and some plain outright lies. There was no battle of Jericho as described. No humiliation of Nebuchadrezzar as in Daniel. No gigantic wealthy kingdom of Solomon. etc. Jealousy and pride gave fuel to the extreme exaggerations and rewriting of actual history. I’m gonna watch this when I get time.

Actually, archeological finds indicate that there was NO military campaign. “Poetic license” lies behind the story of Joshua. These were stories invented to give the people of Israel a sense of historical connection to the land and their people. Historical accuracy and citing sources is a modern invention. The biblical world cared nothing for such niceties of accuracy.

I agree — that might reduce some of the ridiculous religion-based divisions.
It’s a great lecture series — but it will take forever to illustrate.
I like that she is respectful of the book as a piece of literature, while being quite clear about it’s place as another Near Eastern myth.

Great lecture.
All Christians, Jews, and even Muslims should listen to this.
I am amazed that in the 21 th century people still believe in mythology .

I got a little lost in that diagram, but I’m still at the beginning of my studies about the bible, so maybe it will become clearer as time progresses.

@PhyllisSophical
Thanks, Phyllis. Just like you, I got partway and have not resumed because I got distracted.
Ha! I don’t think that there is much in the regular Bible that could be called “factual” ;^/
Still, it’s interesting to learn *about* the Bible. I put a link to an interesting diagram of the times at which different OT books were written. Amusingly, Daniel was written *after* the events it “prophesied”. No surprise there!

Thanks for posting this, heterodoxism. I had actually started listening to these lectures a while ago, but life got in the way. You’ve given me the incentive to return to them. She’s a good lecturer and the course is very informative.
While dealing with life’s problems, I did buy The Jewish Study Bible that she recommends for her course and compared a few topics in that to my regular study bible. I find that the notes in the Jewish Bible are far more factual than in the regular bible.
