EDIS Number: HS-20101226-28952-ARE
Date / time: 26/12/2010 04:44:22 [UTC]
Event: Hailstorm
Area: Middle-East
Country: United Arab Emirates
State/County: Al Fujayrah
City: Fujairah
Number of Deads: None or unknow
Number of Injured: None or unknow
Damage level: Minor
Description:
A hailstorm struck Fujairah on Saturday causing the residents to spend their weekend and season holidays holed up indoors. A representative from the National Center of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) said the occurrence was predicted by forecasters earlier and is a result of a weather change that the country is currently undergoing. According to a report released by NCMS, unstable weather will continue until Monday and a further drop in temperature is expected. Several areas in the country, namely Western Region will be affected by
the change. Residents in Al Safran, located in Liwa (Western Region), had their visibility drastically cut down on Saturday by fog when rates reached about 1,600 metres around 4.15am and cleared by 9.45am. Ras Al Khaimah, Al Ain and its surrounding areas also saw hazy conditions where distance in sight was reduced by 800 metres and 100 metres, respectively. Forecasters explained that this is being caused by east winds travelling inward from the Mediterranean Sea towards the Arabian Gulf accompanied by a low surface pressure. Today and Monday is expected to be pleasant with partly cloudy weather bringing in chances of scattered rain and thunder over Northern and coastal areas. Fresh wind blowing over the sea and open land areas may kick up dust at times over western areas but will settle down by evening. Authorities warned the motorists to drive safely and asked the beach-goers to take special care during the period.

Technological Disaster – Europe – Belgium

EDIS Number: AC-20101225-28949-BEL
Date / time: 25/12/2010 19:50:04 [UTC]
Event: Technological Disaster
Area: Europe
Country: Belgium
State/County: Flanders
City: Diepenbeek
Number of Deads: None or unknow
Number of Injured: None or unknow
Damage level: Minor
Description:
Worshippers at The Regina Pacis church in Diepenbeek must have said their prayers -or someone was certainly listening - at their midnight mass service last night because just hours later the roof collapsed. As this picture shows, had the churchgoers still been inside there would certainly have been mass casualties. Only two walls - one bearing a crucifix - of the structure remain upright. Tonnes of rubble remain where the congregation sang carols and prayed just a few hours earlier. The roof is believed to have given way under the huge weight of snow covering it. Local residents report a huge crashing sound in the middle of the night when the roof gave way.
