If it was too fast heres all the text: Dec. 16, 2008: NASA’s five THEMIS spacecraft have discovered a breach in Earth’s magnetic field ten times larger than anything previously thought to exist. Solar wind can flow in through the opening to “load up” the magnetosphere for powerful geomagnetic storms. But the breach itself is not the biggest surprise. Researchers are even more amazed at the strange and unexpected way it forms, overturning long-held ideas of space physics.The magnetosphere is a bubble of magnetism that surrounds Earth and protects us from solar wind. Exploring the bubble is a key goal of the THEMIS mission, launched in February 2007. The big discovery came on June 3, 2007, when the five probes serendipitously flew through the breach just as it was opening. Onboard sensors recorded a torrent of solar wind particles streaming into the magnetosphere, signaling an event of unexpected size and importance.

@Polum824545201 The magnetic field may ‘turn off’ like on Mars well it is partial on Mars not fully off so to speak.

@xEMOxxPANDAx .. okay …. anyway.. it is believed we are in the middle of a reversal right now.. but this is something that most likely will take 1000 years or more.. december 2012 is just when the mayan calendar resets.. they never gave any warning of the world ending.. ever..

@xEMOxxPANDAx we will never have “no magnetic field” even when there is a reversal.. way in the future.. it will not “turn off” ..we will just have some trouble using compasses for a while.. it will not damage the earth or anyone on it

but if we have no magnetic field for even a small amount of time we have no protection from magnetic storms. if a massive one hits us with the magnetic field down then it will cause a power surge large enough to blow all transformers. electrical down world wide. that itself will cause billions of fatalities. back up power source only lasts a little while. =(

The global temperature has officially decreased! I do not believe in global warming. I believe the first pollution problem we should face is rubish. The earth can take care of CO2 sorta quickly but rubish that we are creating takes a lot more to deal with and break down and even when it has the chemicals aren’t any good for our planet either.

Even IF it wil switch, the only thing that will happen is disfunction of compasses, slightly higher solar radiation (NOT LETHAL), probably disfunction of satelites, that are not porotected by athmosphere. so NO end of the world by the sun in 2012 but as we all know SHIT HAPENS and we’ll not know until 2012

Nasa admitted that 2012 megnetic pole shift is NOT true. They do have proof that the poles have shifted before but they said the mass of our equator compared to all the forces that hit it our earth is pretty much used to the intense heat of the sun,. If anything the way we will most likely go is global warming because of green house gases, and this whole 2012 thing is mumbo jumbo.

The poles have switched loads of times in the last thousands of years, and we’re due a shift! But it defiantly wont happen in 2012. It will take years to switch which will happen gradually where we will have patches of magnetic north/south appearing around the globe, first on their respective sides, then switching fully. This will dramatically change the earths climate (again) by allowing large amounts of solar wind into our atmosphere. And will hugely increase cases of cancer exponentially. YAY

Sorry you wrong here as what you are talking about is magnetic pole shift not schedule to happen for another 1500 years. What the Horizon Project and others are talking about coming up in 2012 is a geographical pole shift not magnetic pole shift mostly to shift the earth about approx 30 degrees as last 3 geographical pole shift believe to have shifted appox 30 degrees, last was around 9000bc.
